‘Good job, girls!’ – Campbell credits Sunshine Girls for Commonwealth Bronze

Former international Netball umpire Sylvester ‘Chris’ Campbell said that, despite the outcome of results for the national senior women’s netball team at the Commonwealth Games, he thinks the Sunshine Girls did well to return to the island with the bronze medal.

The Sunshine Girls, who in their semi-final, lead England by four points going into the fourth and final quarter after leading most of the game, went on to lose 56-55. From there, the Roses went on to beat hosts Australia 52-51 for the gold medal in the final

“I thought they did pretty well, as they were on the podium,” said Campbell. “They lost by one in the semi-finals to the team that won the final, which means all the teams were on the same level. On any given day, anyone could have won depending on the discipline and execution.”

Campbell said that the game could have been better managed in order to seize the opportunity over the Roses, Down Under

“There must have been a bit of breakdown there, (last quarter) and maybe a substitution was needed,” said Campbell who added that another alternative route the Sunshine Girls could have taken was to be patient

“It (leading by six, going into the last quarter) was that kind of game where they could have been just a bit more patient. If you watch the final, the English were very disciplined and they waited until the opportunity presented itself to move,” he added
